29th February A Century of American Imperialist Interventions

Uncle Sam Wants the Whole World!

As no world-changing event has occurred on February 29th, let’s instead take this opportunity to reflect on one country’s determination to dominate the world in the last one hundred years by jackbooting its self-anointed authority across the globe in a succession of largely secret and always self-serving military and CIA interventions.

Since emerging as the economic victor of WWI, a succession of American governments have deployed despotic foreign policies including bullying, lying, cheating, exploitation, extortion and terror to “protect” U.S. interests – supposedly on behalf of its citizens, most of whom have no idea of the atrocities perpetrated in their name and couldn’t even point out on a map the majority of the countries listed below.

These imperialist interventions – ranging from overt wars to covert destablisation campaigns, CIA-backed coups, illegal arms deals, and state-sanctioned terrorism in the form of specially trained  dictators, assassins and “death squads” at the notorious School of the Americas in Georgia – have been undertaken in the name of “security’,  “peace-keeping”, “democracy” and “freedom”. But the truth is that an alarming number of these operations have resulted in absolute bloodbaths. If we were to calculate the death toll, it would exceed Hitler’s and rival Stalin’s.

This chronological roll of shame includes more than 60* separate, (supposedly) sovereign countries – the poorest and most helpless of which were victims of multiple assailments (otherwise known as America’s Third World War). It omits, of course, the pre-20th century Native American genocide as well as the countless acts of terror and murder perpetrated on home soil against U.S. citizens.

  1. Jim Bliss says:

    Serbia 1999 – 78 days of bombing.

  2. Bill says:

We occupied the Philippines from 1899 to the 1980’s and then only shifted from direct to indirect occupation. Fought the Moro tribesman who where Muslim from 1902 to 1913.

  3. Paul Wyrd says:

Hi Dorian, please add the Chagos Island.

According to the link below the USA offered the UK subsidy on polaris in return for a base on the Chagos Island. The inhabitants were duly evicted and to this day have not had justice from the treachorous UK government:

    A rollcall of shame.

    • Dorian says:

Thanks so much for those links, which I will read with interest. Panama is indeed on the list (at the beginning) – as it’s one of those poor “backyard” countries that has come under constant attack from the U.S.

  5. Cat says:

Libya: A CIA backed, instigated and executed counterrevolution where US-NATO bombs, and a proxy rebel ‘army’ on the ground augmented by Western special forces, massacred tens of thousands of people and destroyed the country’s infrastructure in an orgy of brutal war crimes.

  6. William Grosh says:

    From http://worldbeyondwar.org/calendar/
“February 29. On this leap day in 2004, the United States kidnapped and deposed the President of Haiti. This is a good day on which to remember that the claim that democracies don’t go to war with democracies ignores the habit of the U.S. democracy of attacking and overthrowing other democracies.”
